Athens
County Quilt Block Story In 1966 a small group of energetic retired teachers started discussing
the need to become organized as a group - to have closer contact with the state organization. They met at regular intervals
in the old Athens High School located on West State Street. They became officially organized in 1968 as a part of the state
organization. The first president was Mabel Olson Bell followed by Iris Fierce, Helen Dinsmoor, Pauline Fierce, Mary Helen
Rose, Clara Belle Burns, Thomas C. Porter, Dorothy McDonald, Bernice Koehler, Harold Kessler, Marjorie Malone, Bernice Koehler,
Christopher Peterson, Beatrice Peterson and Eva Brown. Each person served a period of two years. Helen
Dinsmoor and Mabel Howell are the only two known charter members. The membership has grown from 10 members to 125 members
in 1996. In 1992, Athens County RTA celebrated its 25th anniversary. |
